Mkholombe Slum
Campaign
Mkholombe is an informal settlement on the edge of Port Shepstone, home to nearly 60,000 people, many of whom arrived here seeking work and a better life. Families from across South Africa and neighboring countries have built their homes from scraps of tin and wood, hoping opportunity would follow.
The community is diverse: Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Indian, and foreign nationals. Each bringing their culture, their traditions, and their struggles. But life here is far from easy.

Unemployment is high. Substance abuse and crime run deep. Too often, children suffer neglect. And while government grants provide some relief, they are too often misused, leaving families still in crisis.
Even the most basic need, clean water, is uncertain. The community relies on a municipal reservoir, but the water is visibly unsafe. Every glass carries the risk of sickness and disease.

This is where The Bucket Ministry is working. By providing simple, life-changing water filters, we’re helping families access clean, safe, drinking water right here in Mkholombe. Each filter can last for years, transforming daily life and giving parents hope for their children’s future.
But our mission is more than water. As we sit in homes, sharing the gift of clean water, we also share the greatest gift of all: the hope of the Gospel. In a place where darkness and despair often feel overwhelming, Jesus’ living water brings eternal hope.
Here in Mkholombe, clean water opens the door, but the Gospel changes everything.
