Nima Slums Campaign
Nima is a slum community located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. The land that Nima currently sits on was given to Alhaji Malam Futa, the leader of a Ghanaian people group, in 1931. During WW2, Western military forces saw to the development of Nima as a city, as they were stationed in the nearby Burma Camp.
Nima is made up of various Ghanaian tribes – each being represented by a chief. Presently, the chairman of the chiefdom over Nima is Chief Seidu Hassan Fuseini.
Though Nima has such a rich history, it is also plagued by many problems. It has an insufficient drainage system – with most of its water pipelines being snaked through the city’s gutters – which often results in its residents contracting cholera, dysentery, and other water-borne diseases.
Over 75,000 people live in Nima, occupying 9,100 dwellings. That means each small, adobe dwelling houses an average of 7.7 people. Many of these homes are no bigger than an average American pantry.
The total cost of this campaign is $647,637. While this may seem like a massive figure, we find that a generation of clean, safe, drinking water and the opportunity of an eternity with Jesus Christ for over 9,000 families has far greater value.
Clean water scarcity, extreme population density, and little to no access to modern sanitation and hygiene – Nima is truly in need of a radical intervention.
